Wix vs Squarespace vs GoDaddy vs Natterio for a small UK club

An honest comparison of Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy and Natterio for a small UK club: what to look at, where each fits, and what to check before you pay.

If you are choosing a website builder for a small UK club, you will keep meeting the same four or five names. Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy are general-purpose builders used by millions of businesses and individuals. Natterio, our own product, is built specifically for UK clubs, societies and small charities. This comparison explains what to weigh up and where each tends to fit. We make Natterio, so read our view with that in mind, and treat every competitor detail below as something to check yourself.

Prices, plans and features change often. We have deliberately not quoted figures for other companies. Check each provider's current pricing page, including renewal prices and what is included, before you decide.

What a club actually needs

Before comparing tools, list the job. Most clubs need:

  • A home page saying what you do, where and when you meet.
  • A way for newcomers to contact you or join.
  • A page for news and events, kept current.
  • Policies people expect: privacy, and safeguarding where it applies.
  • A cookie notice if the site uses non-essential cookies.
  • Something a volunteer can update without a course, and a simple way to hand over to the next person.
  • A cost the committee can approve and the treasurer can predict.

Everything else, such as animations, large template libraries and advanced design controls, is optional. Our guide on how to make a club website lists the basics, and club website costs in the UK breaks the money down.

The comparison criteria

When you test any builder, compare the same things:

  1. Is there a free plan, and is it permanent or a trial? Some "free" offers are time-limited trials, or free plans that carry the provider's adverts or branding. Check what appears on your pages.
  2. What does the paid plan cost, per year, including the domain? Look at the price after the first term. Check whether the advertised price is billed monthly or annually and whether it includes VAT.
  3. Can you use your own domain (such as yourclub.org.uk), and is it included or extra?
  4. How easy is it for a non-expert to edit? Try editing a page on your phone.
  5. UK-specific needs: cookie consent, privacy policy help, and wording for UK charities and clubs.
  6. Extras: forms, events, a members' area, forum, shop. Which are included and which cost more?
  7. Leaving: can you export your content, and what happens to your domain if you cancel?
  8. Support: who do you ask, and how do they respond?

Wix

Wix is a very widely used general-purpose builder with a large template library and a drag-and-drop editor. It offers a lot of design freedom and a wide range of add-ons, and plenty of small groups have used it successfully. Things to check for a club: what the free plan shows (the provider's branding and whether you can use your own domain), the price of the plan that removes branding and adds a domain, how renewal pricing compares with the first term, and how much effort you will spend tidying a page that is easy to make look inconsistent. Drag-and-drop freedom is helpful for designers and can be a burden for a volunteer who just wants a tidy page. If you are weighing Wix directly, our Natterio vs Wix comparison goes deeper.

Squarespace

Squarespace is a general-purpose builder known for polished, design-led templates. It suits people who care about looks and are happy to spend time on layout. For a club, look at: whether there is a free plan or only a trial and what happens when the trial ends, the cost of the plan that suits you (annual billing often differs from monthly), how its pricing compares once you add a domain, and whether the template-based editing is simple enough for the next volunteer. Check what your country-specific needs require, such as cookie consent configuration. As with Wix, it is not built for clubs specifically, so you assemble the club-shaped pages yourself.

GoDaddy

GoDaddy is best known for domain registration and hosting, and it also offers a website builder aimed at small businesses, including a guided setup. It can be an easy way to buy a domain and a simple site in one place. Check carefully: which plan includes what, the renewal price of the domain and plan after the first term, and the add-ons that may be suggested during checkout. If you buy your domain there and build elsewhere, that works too, as long as you know where the domain is registered and who holds the login. See club website custom domain and email.

Natterio

Natterio is a website builder designed specifically for UK clubs, societies and small charities. You answer a few questions about your club and the AI generates a complete, club-shaped site that you can then edit in place. The free plan is permanent: a live 3-page site on a Natterio subdomain, with no card needed. Paid plans start from £7 a month and add things such as your own domain, a forum and a shop; see pricing and features for the current details.

Honest limits: it is a young, focused product, not a general-purpose builder with years of templates. It is not the right choice if you want pixel-level design control, a big e-commerce store, or an elaborate multi-language site. It does not replace sport-specific systems for fixtures, league tables or payments that some governing bodies expect; for those, see alternatives to Pitchero and ClubSpark alternatives.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose a general builder (Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy) if you have someone who enjoys design, you want fine control, or you need something club-specific tools cannot give.
  • Choose a club-focused tool if you want a sensible starting structure, minimal fuss and a simple handover.
  • Choose the free route first if your club has no budget. A free, ad-free site is better than none, and you can move later. Our best free club website builders in the UK lists the options.

A good test is to build the home page in each in under an hour. The one that gets you a clean, accurate site fastest is probably the right one for your volunteers.

Before you commit

  • Ask the committee who will own the login, and use a role-based email address.
  • Write down the renewal date and the full yearly cost.
  • Check you can export your text and images.
  • Make sure the site has a privacy notice and cookie notice. See cookie banners for small clubs.
  • Read the terms about advertising on free plans.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheapest for a small club: Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy or Natterio?+

Prices change and depend on plan, billing period and domain, so check each provider's current pricing page. Natterio has a permanent free plan and paid plans from £7 a month.

Can I use my own domain on a free plan?+

Often not. Many free plans use the provider's subdomain. Check the details for each provider. On Natterio, a custom domain is included from the Starter plan.

Is Natterio better than Wix for a club?+

It depends. Wix offers more design freedom and add-ons; Natterio is narrower and aimed at getting a club site live quickly with less effort. Test both with your own content.

Can I move my site later if I outgrow it?+

Usually yes, but check export options before you commit. Keep copies of your text and images, and make sure you own your domain.

Do I need a cookie banner on a club website?+

If your site uses non-essential cookies or similar technologies, you generally need consent. Many small sites avoid them. Check what your builder adds by default.
