The short answer: keep Spond for what it does best, which is scheduling, RSVPs and messaging your squad. If you want a public website as well, Spond sells a Club Website add-on that its own page prices at £19 + VAT a month in the UK once a free trial ends. You do not have to buy it: a separate website, including a free one, can sit alongside the Spond app and do the public-facing job.
Whether the add-on is worth it depends on how much you value having everything under one login. This guide sets out the facts we could verify on 30 October 2026, including the places where Spond's own pages disagree with each other.
What Spond does brilliantly
Spond describes its core app as free for clubs and teams. Its pages list event scheduling, attendance tracking, group messaging, membership management and availability requests among the free features, and it is widely used because members actually open it. Payments can be collected through the app, and Spond says a processing fee applies; the person requesting the payment can choose whether to absorb it or add it to the total. Spond's own materials are a vendor's claims, so check the current fee before you rely on it.
For "who is playing on Saturday, who has paid, who is bringing the oranges", an app beats any website. That is why we do not suggest replacing Spond with a website. The two do different jobs.
What the Club Website add-on costs
Spond's Club Website page says the feature "comes with a free trial" and lists the UK price as £19 + VAT a month after it ends. You can cancel before the trial ends to avoid charges. The page also says it supports customisable designs and the option to connect a custom domain.
Spond's pages are not fully consistent, so read the detail:
- Trial length. A Spond blog post says you can try the platform free for 6 months with no commitment. Spond's help centre has been reported to give six months for UK users and twelve for US users, but the Club Website page itself does not state the length. Confirm in your own account.
- Price. The Club Website page shows £19 + VAT. A Spond blog post quotes £19.99 in one section and £14.95 in its FAQ. We would trust the product page and your checkout screen over a blog.
- VAT. If your club is not VAT-registered, plan for the VAT-inclusive figure. On £19 that is £22.80 a month, roughly £274 a year. (That is our arithmetic, not a Spond figure.)
So a typical club that adds the website pays nothing for the trial period and then around £228 a year before VAT.
When to just pay Spond
Paying for the add-on is a sensible choice if:
- Your committee wants one login and one bill and will not maintain a second tool.
- Your site is mostly about the squad: fixtures, availability, a few photos.
- You already collect fees through Spond and want the public page to match.
There is nothing wrong with that. A website that is a few clicks from your events is genuinely convenient.
When a separate website makes more sense
- You want a site with real depth: news, a history page, a results table, a contact form, a members area. A website builder gives you more pages and more control.
- You want to pay nothing: a free-plan website costs £0 and the Spond app is free, so the combination can cost nothing.
- You want to own the web address and email: a site on your own domain with addresses like secretary@yourclub.org.uk survives committee changes better than a login tied to one person.
- You are not a sports club. Spond is built around squads and sessions. A choir, a history society or a friends group may want pages more than an events app.
How a free site sits beside Spond
The cleanest split is simple:
- Spond keeps the private side: RSVPs, squad chat, who is on the team sheet, payments.
- The website handles the public side: who you are, when and where you meet, how to join, news, results, contact details.
- Link between them. Put a "Members: join our Spond group" button on your Join page. You do not need to embed anything; a link is enough and keeps your members' data inside Spond.
Keep the website free of personal details that belong in the app: no addresses of members, no phone numbers, and no names of under-18s alongside photos. Our privacy policy template and GDPR guide cover what a small club should publish.

A setup checklist
- Stay on Spond for scheduling and messaging.
- Tell Natterio your club's name and what you do; it writes a three-page site (home, about, contact) in about a minute.
- Add your meeting times, venue, join instructions and a link to your Spond group.
- Add a news post when something changes, like a new season or a fundraiser.
- If you want a proper web address and email, check the pricing page and read our guide to a custom domain and email.
- Put the website address in your Spond group description, on kit, and on match-day signage.
- Give two committee members the logins; see handing over a club website.
If your club also needs fixtures feeds or booking, a platform like Pitchero or ClubSpark may suit better; see our Pitchero alternatives guide and ClubSpark alternatives.
